Children are waiting in lines because they are preparing to organize an activity in order to express their appreciation towards their teachers. They are holding their gifts that they made by themselves.
It is time to begin the activity. The children hear the music for open the activity, and they are preparing for walking into the conference room..
At the beginning of the activity, the president of the school introduces the goal of the school and the current students and teachers. She believes that people cannot forget their roots even though they are far away from their hometowns. She does not want the Chinese children who were born in America to forget the Chinese tradition. She also talks about the significance of this activity. She tells us that appreciation is one important part of people’s lives.
All the teachers are standing in the front of the conference room. The representatives of the children’s parents are awarding the prizes for the teachers.
All the children are holding their gifts and walking to their teachers. All the people are really excited and the atmosphere is very vivid.
The children are walking towards their teachers and all the audience are watching children and teachers.
All the teachers are really moved and they are smiling to their students.
All the children are kneeling down to give their gifts to their teachers. The teachers feel really moved and they express their happiness to their students..
Since the topic of this project asks to talk about the question “ How does place related
to and/or shape yourself?” We need to talk about our current place, the United States, and find evidence to prove that we indeed are changed by the influence of our place.
As for me, the first thing comes to my mind is the volunteer work at the TzuChi school.
Unlike other primary schools, this school is very special because it only teaches Chinese to children. Most of the students are American Chinese students, meaning that
they have Chinese parents or at least one of their parents is Chinese but these children cannot speak Chinese. When I firstly volunteer at this school, my emotion is really complicated. Because these children do not know Chinese traditions and cultures, and their native language is English instead of Chinese. When I try to tutor one child, he resists speaking Chinese because he believes he is American. I feel a little sad towards this situation. Although they look like Chinese children, and they have black hair and black eyes, but they are not Chinese at all. Fortunately, their parents do not want their children lose their roots, and ask them to study in this special school. When I attend the activity that the school hold in order to express the appreciation towards the teachers, I feel really moved. From the speech of the president and the gifts that the children prepare for their teachers, I feel the Chinese traditional culture. It is kind of Confucianism, and the key principles are Ren, Li, Zhong, Xiao. I really hope that these children and I will not forget the roots of our hometowns. However, when I was in China, I did not think of too much about our traditional cultures. I believe that after I study aboard, the emotion of nostalgia increases and never disappears. I begin to cherish Chinese culture that I used to ignore in the past, and I begin to feel that I am really proud of being Chinese. Perhaps since I live in a different place comparing to China, the culture shock makes me notice the advantages and disadvantages of Chinese cultures more clearly. In conclusion, I believe that the biggest change of me is to learn appreciation. I appreciate the chance that I can live in America now and have a different lifestyle to have a more advisable comprehension of my life. I appreciate the life here to make me know what I really want to cherish and to pursue.
